Soft Drinks Under Accusation For Obesity

According to a study they would not help to reduce weight, in children but also in adults

BERN - Light drinks, sweetened with aspartame or other sweeteners, do not help to reduce weight, in children but also in adults. Rather. Their consumption is even associated with overweight and obesity, according to a study published in Obesity facts.

These drinks, the authors explain, "provide an additional 114 kilocalories a day and are the main source of added sugar", despite being presented by industry as a "healthy" alternative to classic drinks.

The research, carried out by an international team led by Nathalie Farpour-Lambert, a pediatrician at the University Hospital of Geneva, has analyzed 30 studies - none of which financed by the agro-food industry - published between 2013 and 2015 for a total of 245 thousand people from all over the world, children and adults. Almost all research has shown a link between weight gain and consumption of light drinks, even for moderate use.

This, the researchers hypothesize, could be due to the fact that sweeteners increase the sensation of hunger, above all, they increase the appetite for fat or sweet foods. But according to other hypotheses, consumers of these drinks produce fewer hormones than satiety, or sweeteners alter the intestinal microbiota favoring the onset of diabetes.
