(BITTER) SWEET STROKES OF BAD LUCK

"He had a massive stroke. He died with his tie on. Do you think that could be our generation's equivalent of that old saying about dying with your boots on?" - Stephen King

The March, 2019 issue of the journal 'Stroke' includes a study of the neurological effect Artificially Sweetened Beverage (ASB) consumption can have on women who subsequently suffer Strokes, Heart Disease, and death. Researchers followed 93,676 postmenopausal women age 50 to 79 for an average of 11.9 years and determined:

*

"High consumption of ASB was associated with more than a 2-fold increased risk of small artery occlusion ischemic stroke; high consumption of ASBs was associated with significantly increased risk of ischemic stroke in women." Epidemiologists concluded:

*

"Higher intake of ASB was associated with increased risk of stroke, particularly small artery occlusion subtype, coronary heart disease, and all-cause mortality. These new findings add to the potentially harmful association of consuming high quantities of ASB with these health outcomes."

In 1998, CBS '60 Minutes' news editor Isador Roesmarin produced a segment on the artificial sweetener, NutraSweet (aspartame). I was asked to review some of the key research leading to approval and then interviewed for the program. FDA had reviewed 112 studies, and the most important "pivotal" research included 17 studies.

*

FDA concluded that there was no evidence of biological effects on laboratory animals from aspartame treatment. At the time, I believed animal research provided some validity. Today, I reject such absurdity. In reviewing the key "pivotal" studies, I found one performed at the University of Wisconsin on Rhesus monkeys. Every primate in the Rao and Raisman low, medium, and high-dose groups developed grand mal epileptic seizures after day 300 of the 365-day study. After the study ended, the aspartame was discontinued. Seizure activity ended.

The Rhesus monkey evidence would have been a slam dunk, had the respected television show not edited my interview, leaving the smoking gun on the post-production room floor. FDA lied when they concluded that there were no adverse effects on lab animals. Whether or not one can extrapolate animal research data to humans is not the point here. Using animal research to prove points was and remains FDA's protocol. In the middle of the "game", they broke their own rules. The experiment ended, the clock ran out, they took the ball, then bribed the referee. I was in shock when Michael Friedman appeared on 60 Minutes. Despite the fact that I personally handed the man the facts which could have saved many lives, he repeated the FDA lie. Friedman denied that there was any evidence of adverse effects on laboratory animals. We're finally receiving evidence that humans suffer neurological effects too.
